Growing Old Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAC DEFE AGAG HEIE JEJE

Little by little the year grows oldA
The red leaves drop from the maple boughsB
The sun grows dim and the winds blow coldA
Down from the distant arctic seasC
-
Out of the skies the soft light diesD
And the shadows of autumn come creeping overE
And the bee and the bird are no longer heardF
In grove or meadow or field of cloverE
-
Little by little our lives grow oldA
Our faces no longer are fair to seeG
For gray creeps into the curls of goldA
And the red fades out of the cheeks ah meG
-
And the birds that sang till our heart strings rangH
With strains of hope and joy and pleasureE
Have flown away and our hearts todayI
Hear only the weird wind's solemn measureE
-
Youth and summer and beauty and bloomJ
Droop and die in the autumn weatherE
But up from the gloom of the winter's tombJ
They shall rise in God's good time togetherE
