We did not pant for the fray | B |
And whatever wrongs need righting | A |
We would not have met that way | B |
But the way that has opened before us | C |
Leads on thro' a blood red field | D |
And we swear by the great God o'er us | C |
We will die but we will not yield | D |

The battle is not of our making | A |
And war was never our plan | E |
Yet all that is sweet forsaking | A |
We march to it man by man | E |
It is either to smite or be smitten | F |
There's no other choice to day | B |
And we live as befits the Briton | F |
Or we die as the Briton may | B |

Or to feed from a keeper's hand | H |
Our strength which has grown thro' ages | I |
Is the strength of a slave free land | H |
We cannot kneel down to a master | J |
To our God alone can we pray | B |

To fight like a lion at bay | B |
