I THE MOTHER'S KISSA
-
Love breathed a secret to her listening heartB
And said Be silent Though she guarded itC
And dwelt as one within a world apartB
Yet sun and star seemed by that secret litC
And where she passed each whispering wind ablowD
And every little blossom in the sodE
Called joyously to her We know we knowF
For are we not the intimates of GodE
Life grew so radiant and so opulentG
That when her fragile body and her brainH
By mortal throes of agony were rentI
She felt a curious rapture in her painH
Then after anguish came the supreme blissA
They brought the little baby for her kissA

II THE BETROTHALD
-
There was a little pause between the dancesJ
Without somewhere a tinkling fountain playedK
The dusky path was lit by ardent glancesL
As forth they fared a lover and a maidK
He chose a nook from curious eyes well hiddenM
All redolent with sweet midsummer charmN
And by the great primeval instinct biddenO
He drew her in the shelter of his armN
The words that long deep in his heart had trembledP
Found sudden utterance she at first dissembledP
Refused her lips and half withdrew her handP
Then murmured Yes and yielded woman fashionM
Her virgin mouth to young love's kiss of passionM

III THE BRIDAL KISSA
-
As fleecy clouds trail back across the skiesQ
Showing the sweet young moon in azure spaceR
The lifted veil revealed her shining faceR
A sudden wonder to his eager eyesQ
In that familiar beauty lurked surpriseQ
For now the wife stood in the maiden's placeR
With conscious dignity and woman's graceR
And love's large pride grown trebly fair and wiseQ
-
The world receded leaving them aloneS
The universe was theirs from sphere to sphereT
And life assumed new meaning and new worthU
Love held no privilege they did not ownS
And when they kissed each other without fearT
They understood why God had made the earthU
-
IV DOMESTIC BLISSA
-
Sequestered in their calm domestic bowerV
They sat together He in manhood's primeW
And she a matron in her fullest flowerV
The mantel clock gave forth a warning chimeW
She put her work aside his bright cigarX
Grew pale and crumbled in an ashen heapY
The lights went out save one remaining starX
That watched beside the children in their sleepY
She hummed a little song and nestled nearT
As side by side they went to their reposeZ
His arm about her waist he whispered DearT
And pressed his lips upon her mouth's full roseZ
The sacred sweetness of their wedded lifeA2
Breathed in that kiss of husband and of wifeA2
-
V OLD AGEB2
-
The young see heaven but to the old who waitP
The final call the hills of youth ariseQ
More beautiful than shores of ParadiseC2
Beside a glowing and voracious grateP
A dozing couple dream of yesterdayP
The islands of a vanished past appearT
Bringing forgotten names and faces nearT
While lost in mist the present fades awayP
The fragrant winds of tender memories blowD
Across the gardens of the Used to beD2
They smile into each other's eyes and seeD2
The bride and bridegroom of the long agoD
And tremulous lips pressed close to faded cheekE2
Love's silent tale of deathless passion speakE2
