Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEFE GHIHJKLK MNONPCDC QRSRCEBELike a thorn in the flesh like a fly in the mesh | A |
Like a boat that is chained to shore | B |
The wild unrest of the heart in my breast | C |
Tortures me more and more | B |
I wot not why it should wail and cry | D |
Like a child that is lost at night | E |
For it knew no grief but has found relief | F |
And it is not touched with blight | E |
- | |
It has had of pleasure full many a measure | G |
It has thrilled with love's red wine | H |
It has hope and health and youth's rare wealth | I |
Oh rich is this heart of mine | H |
Yet it is not glad it is wild and mad | J |
Like a billow before it breaks | K |
And its ceaseless pain is worse than vain | L |
Since it knows not why it aches | K |
- | |
It longs to be like the waves of the sea | M |
That rise in their might and beat | N |
And dash and lunge and hurry and plunge | O |
And die at the grey rocks' feet | N |
It wearies of life and it sickens of strife | P |
And yet it tires of rest | C |
Oh I know not why it should ache and cry | D |
'Tis a troublesome heart at best | C |
- | |
Though not understood I think it a good | Q |
And God like discontent | R |
It springs from the soul that longs for its goal | S |
For the source from which it was sent | R |
Then surge O breast with thy wild unrest | C |
Cry heart like a child at night | E |
Till the mystic shore of the Evermore | B |
Shall dawn on thy eager sight | E |
