Compensations: 01 - Blind Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABACDEFEGHGHII

When first the shadows fell like prison barsA
And darkness spread before me like a pallB
I cried out for the sun the earth the starsA
And beat the air as madmen beat a wallC
Till impotent and broken with despairD
I turned my vision inward Lo a sparkE
A light a torch and all my world grew brightF
For God's dear eyes were shining through the darkE
Then bringing to me gifts of recompenseG
Came keener hearing finer taste and touchH
And that oft unappreciated senseG
Which finds sweet odours and proclaims them suchH
And not until my mortal eyes were blindI
Did I perceive how kind the world how kindI
