Sometimes I feel so passionate a yearningA
-
For spiritual perfection here belowB
-
This vigorous frame with healthful fervor burningA
-
Seems my determined foeB
-
So actively it makes a stern resistanceC
-
So cruelly sometimes it wages warD
-
Against a wholly spiritual existenceC
-
Which I am striving forD
-
It interrupts my soul's intense devotionsC
-
Some hope it strangles of divinest birthE
-
With a swift rush of violent emotionsC
-
Which link me to the earthE
-
It is as if two mortal foes contendedF
-
Within my bosom in a deadly strifeG
-
One for the loftier aims for souls intendedH
-
One for the earthly lifeG
-
And yet I know this very war within meI
-
Which brings out all my will power and controlJ
-
This very conflict at the last shall win meI
-
The loved and longed for goalJ
-
The very fire which seems sometimes so cruelK
-
Is the white light that shows me my own strengthL
-
A furnace fed by the divinest fuelK
-
It may become at lengthL
-
Ah when in the immortal ranks enlistedF
-
I sometimes wonder if we shall not findM
-
That not by deeds but by what we've resistedF
-
Our places are assignedM
