Rhyme Scheme: A B A B C D C D C E C E F G H G I J I J K L K L F M F MSometimes I feel so passionate a yearning | A |
- | |
For spiritual perfection here below | B |
- | |
This vigorous frame with healthful fervor burning | A |
- | |
Seems my determined foe | B |
- | |
So actively it makes a stern resistance | C |
- | |
So cruelly sometimes it wages war | D |
- | |
Against a wholly spiritual existence | C |
- | |
Which I am striving for | D |
- | |
It interrupts my soul's intense devotions | C |
- | |
Some hope it strangles of divinest birth | E |
- | |
With a swift rush of violent emotions | C |
- | |
Which link me to the earth | E |
- | |
It is as if two mortal foes contended | F |
- | |
Within my bosom in a deadly strife | G |
- | |
One for the loftier aims for souls intended | H |
- | |
One for the earthly life | G |
- | |
And yet I know this very war within me | I |
- | |
Which brings out all my will power and control | J |
- | |
This very conflict at the last shall win me | I |
- | |
The loved and longed for goal | J |
- | |
The very fire which seems sometimes so cruel | K |
- | |
Is the white light that shows me my own strength | L |
- | |
A furnace fed by the divinest fuel | K |
- | |
It may become at length | L |
- | |
Ah when in the immortal ranks enlisted | F |
- | |
I sometimes wonder if we shall not find | M |
- | |
That not by deeds but by what we've resisted | F |
- | |
Our places are assigned | M |
