An Empty Crib Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB ACAC ABAB DEDE

Beside a crib that holds a baby s stockingA
A tattered picture book a broken toyB
A sleeping mother dreams that she is rockingA
Her fair haired cherub boyB
-
Upon the cradle s side her light touch keepingA
She gently rocks it crooning low a songC
And smiles to think her little one is sleepingA
So peacefully and longC
-
Step light breathe low break not her rapturous dreamingA
Wake not the sleeper from her trance of joyB
For never more save in sweet slumber seemingA
Will she watch o er her little boyB
-
God pity her when from her dream ElysianD
She wakes to see the empty crib and weepE
Knowing her joy was but a sleeper s visionD
Tread lightly let her sleepE
