An Afternoon Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AAAB CCCB DDDE FFFE GGGE HHHE DDDE IIIE

I am stirred by the dream of an afternoonA
Of a perfect day though it was not JuneA
The lilt of winds and the droning tuneA
That a busy city was hummingB
-
And a bronze brown head and lips like wineC
Leaning out through the window vineC
A list for steps that were maybe mineC
Eager steps that were comingB
-
I can see it all as a dreamer mayD
The tender smile on your lips that dayD
And the glow on your cheek as we rode awayD
Into the golden weatherE
-
And a love light shone in your eyes of brownF
I swear there did as we drove downF
The crowded avenue out of the townF
Through shadowy lanes togetherE
-
Drove out into the sunset skiesG
That glowed with wonderful crimson dyesG
And with soul and spirit and heart and eyesG
We silently drank their splendourE
-
But the golden glory that lit the placeH
Was not alone from the sunset's graceH
For I saw in your fair uplifted faceH
A light that was wondrously tenderE
-
I say I saw it And yet to dayD
I ask myself in a cynical wayD
Was it only a part you had learned to playD
To see me act the loverE
-
And I curse myself for a fool And yetI
I would willingly die without one regretI
Could I bring back the day whose sun has setI
And you and live it overE
