Read at Reunion of the G A T Madison Wis JulyA
-
After the battles are overB
And the war drums cease to beatC
And no more is heard on the hillsideD
The sound of hurrying feetC
Full many a noble actionE
That was done in the days of strifeF
By the soldier is half forgottenE
In the peaceful walks of lifeF
-
Just as the tangled grassesG
In Summer's warmth and lightH
Grow over the graves of the fallenE
And hide them away from sightH
So many an act of valourB
And many a deed sublimeI
Fade from the mind of the soldierB
O'ergrown by the grass of timeI
-
Not so should they be rewardedJ
Those noble deeds of oldK
They should live for ever and everB
When the heroes' hearts are coldK
Then rally ye brave old comradesL
Old veterans reuniteH
Uproot Time's tangled grassesG
Live over the march and the fightH
-
Let Grant come up from the White HouseM
And clasp each brother's handN
First chieftain of the armyO
Last chieftain of the landN
Let him rest from a nation's burdensP
And go in thought with his menQ
Through the fire and smoke of ShilohR
And save the day againQ
-
This silent hero of battlesS
Knew no such word as defeatC
It was left for the rebels' learningT
Along with the word retreatC
He was not given to talkingT
But he found that guns would preachU
In a way that was more convincingT
Than fine and flowery speechU
-
Three cheers for the grave commanderB
Of the grand old TennesseeO
Who won the first great battleV
Gained the first great victoryO
His motto was always ConquerB
Success was his countersignQ
And though it took all SummerB
He kept fighting upon that lineQ
-
Let Sherman the stern old GeneralV
Come rallying with his menQ
Let them march once more through GeorgiaW
And down to the sea againQ
Oh that grand old tramp to SavannahW
Three hundred miles to the coastX
It will live in the heart of the nationQ
For ever its pride and boastX
-
As Sheridan went to the battleV
When a score of miles awayY
He has come to the feast and banquetZ
By the iron horse to dayY
Its pace is not much swifterB
Than the pace of that famous steedA2
Which bore him down to the contestB2
And saved the day by his speedA2
-
Then go over the ground to day boysC2
Tread each remembered spotD2
It will be a gleesome journeyQ
On the swift shod feet of thoughtE2
You can fight a bloodless battleV
You can skirmish along the routeF2
But it's not worth while to forageG2
There are rations enough withoutH2
-
Don't start if you hear the cannonQ
It is not the sound of doomI2
It does not call to the contestB2
To the battle's smoke and gloomI2
Let us have peace was spokenQ
And lo peace ruled againQ
And now the nation is shoutingT
Through the cannon's voice AmenQ
-
O boys who besieged old VicksburghB
Can time e'er wash awayY
The triumph of her surrenderB
Nine years ago to dayY
Can you ever forget the momentJ2
When you saw the flag of whiteH
That told how the grim old cityQ
Had fallen in her mightH
-
Ah 'twas a bold brave armyQ
When the boys with a right good willK2
Went gaily marching and singingT
To the fight at Champion HillK2
They met with a warm receptionQ
But the soul of Old John BrownQ
Was abroad on that field of battleV
And our flag did NOT go downQ
-
Come heroes of Look Out MountainQ
Of Corinth and DonelsonQ
Of Kenesaw and AtlantaW
And tell how the day was wonQ
Hush bow the head for a momentJ2
There are those who cannot comeL2
No bugle call can arouse themM2
No sound of fife or drumL2
-
Oh boys who died for the countryQ
Oh dear and sainted deadN2
What can we say about youO2
That has not once been saidN2
Whether you fell in the contestB2
Struck down by shot and shellP2
Or pined 'neath the hand of sicknessQ2
Or starved in the prison cellP2
-
We know that you died for FreedomL2
To save our land from shameR2
To rescue a perilled NationQ
And we give you deathless fameR2
'Twas the cause of Truth and JusticeQ2
That you fought and perished forB
And we say it oh so gentlyQ
Our boys who died in the warB
-
Saviours of our RepublicS2
Heroes who wore the blueO2
We owe the peace that surrounds usQ2
And our Nation's strength to youO2
We owe it to you that our bannerB
The fairest flag in the worldT2
Is to day unstained unsulliedA2
On the Summer air unfurledT2
-
We look on its stripes and spanglesQ2
And our hearts are filled the whileU2
With love for the brave commandersQ2
And the boys of the rank and fileU2
The grandest deeds of valourB
Were never written outH2
The noblest acts of virtueO2
The world knows nothing aboutH2
-
And many a private soldierB
Who walks his humble wayY
With no sounding name or titleV
Unknown to the world to dayY
In the eyes of God is a heroB
As worthy of the baysQ2
As any mighty GeneralV
To whom the world gives praiseQ2
-
Brave men of a mighty armyQ
We extend you friendship's handN
I speak for the Loyal WomenQ
Those pillars of our landN
We wish you a hearty welcomeL2
We are proud that you gather hereB
To talk of old times togetherB
On this brightest day in the yearB
-
And if Peace whose snow white pinionsQ2
Brood over our land to dayY
Should ever again go from usQ2
God grant she may ever stayY
Should our Nation call in her perilV
For Six hundred thousand moreB
The loyal women would hear herB
And send you out as beforeB
-
We would bring out the treasured knapsackV2
We would take the sword from the wallW2
And hushing our own hearts' pleadingsQ2
Hear only the country's callW2
For next to our God is our NationQ
And we cherish the honoured nameR2
Of the bravest of all brave armiesQ2
Who fought for that Nation's fameR2
