A Waltz-quadrille Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCCDEED AFAGBBHCCD ABABCCDBBD ABABBBDIID

The band was playing a waltz quadrilleA
I felt as light as a wind blown featherB
As we floated away at the caller s willA
Through the intricate mazy dance togetherB
Like mimic armies our lines were meetingC
Slowly advancing and then retreatingC
All decked in their bright arrayD
And back and forth to the music s rhymeE
We moved together and all the timeE
I knew you were going awayD
-
The fold of your strong arm sent a thrillA
From heart to brain as we gently glidedF
Like leaves on the wave of that waltz quadrilleA
Parted met and again dividedG
You drifting one way and I anotherB
Then suddenly turning and facing each otherB
Then off in the blithe chasseH
Then airily back to our places swayingC
While every beat of the music seemed sayingC
That you were going awayD
-
I said to my heart Let us take our fillA
Of mirth and music and love and laughterB
For it all must end with this waltz quadrilleA
And life will never be the same life afterB
Oh that the caller might go on callingC
Oh that the music might go on fallingC
Like a shower of silver sprayD
While we whirled on to the vast ForeverB
Where no hearts break and no ties severB
And no one goes awayD
-
A clamour a crash and the band was stillA
Twas the end of the dream and the end of the measureB
The last low notes of that waltz quadrilleA
Seemed like a dirge o er the death of PleasureB
You said good night and the spell was overB
Too warm for a friend and too cold for a loverB
There was nothing else to sayD
But the lights looked dim and the dancers wearyI
And the music was sad and the hall was drearyI
After you went awayD
