A Vision Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABACAC DADAEFEF GHGHIJIJ EKEKELE

My soul beheld a vision of the MasterA
Methought He stood with grieved and questioning eyesB
Where Freedom drove its chariot to disasterA
And toilers heard unheeding toilers' criesB
Where man withheld God's bounties from his neighbourA
And fertile fields were sterilised by greedC
Where Labour's hand was lifted against labourA
And suffering serfs to despots turned when freedC
-
Majestic rose tall steeple after steepleD
Imperious bells called worshippers to prayerA
But as they passed the faces of the peopleD
Were marred by envy anger and despairA
'Christ the Redeemer of the world has risenE
Peace and good will ' so rang the major strainF
But forth from sweat shops tenement and prisonE
Wailed minor protests redolent with painF
-
Methought about the Master all unseeingG
Fought desperate hosts of striking clan with clanH
Their primal purpose meant for labour's freeingG
Sunk in vindictive hate of man for manH
Pretentious Wealth in unearned robes of beautyI
Flung Want a pittance from her bulging purseJ
While ill paid Toil went on dull rounds of dutyI
Hell in her heart and on her lips a curseJ
-
Then spoke the Christ so wondrous was my visionE
Deep deep His voice with sorrow's cadence fraughtK
'This world to day would be a realm elysianE
Had my disciples lived the love I taughtK
Un Christlike is the Christian creed men fashionE
Who kneel to worship and who rise to slayL
Profane pretenders of my holy PassionE
Ye nail Me newly to the cross each day '-
