A Tumbler Of Claret Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDED FGC AHCH IJKLMANA HOEOPQRH Q ASTSEUAU TAV AAAAWAAA| I poured out a tumbler of Claret | A |
| Of course with intention to drink | B |
| And holding it up in the sunlight | A |
| I paused for a moment to think | B |
| I really can't tell you what made me | C |
| I never had done so before | D |
| Though for years every day at my dinner | E |
| I had emptied one tumbler or more | D |
| - | |
| - | |
| 'A friend' in the loneliest hours | F |
| 'A companion ' I called the red wine | G |
| And sometimes I poetized slightly | C |
| And called it a 'nectar divine ' | - |
| But to day as I gazed at the claret | A |
| That sparkled and glowed in the sun | H |
| I asked it 'What have you done for me | C |
| That any true friend would have done | H |
| - | |
| - | |
| 'You have given me some pleasant feelings | I |
| But they always were followed by pain | J |
| You have given me ten thousand headaches | K |
| And are ready to do it again | L |
| You have set my blood leaping and bounding | M |
| Which though pleasant was hurtful no doubt | A |
| And if I keep up the acquaintance | N |
| I am sure you will give me the gout | A |
| - | |
| - | |
| 'I remember a certain occasion | H |
| When you caused me to act like a fool | O |
| And yes I remember another | E |
| When you made me fall into a pool | O |
| And there was Tom Smithers you killed him | P |
| Will Howard you made a poor knave | Q |
| Both my friends and I might count a | R |
| dozen | H |
| - | |
| You have sent to the prison or grave | Q |
| - | |
| - | |
| 'Is this like a loyal friend's treatment | A |
| And are you deserving the name | S |
| Say what do you give those who love you | T |
| But poverty sorrow and shame | S |
| A few paltry moments of pleasure | E |
| And ages of trouble and grief | U |
| No wonder you blush in the sunlight | A |
| You robber you liar you thief | U |
| - | |
| - | |
| 'I will have nothing more to do with you | T |
| From this moment this hour this day | A |
| To send you adrift bag and baggage | V |
| I know is the only safe way ' | - |
| And I poured out that tumbler of claret | A |
| Poured it | A |
| out | A |
| and not | A |
| down | W |
| on the spot | A |
| And all this you see was accomplished | A |
| By a few sober moments of thought | A |
