Long long ago ere yet our race beganA
When earth was empty waiting still for manA
Before the breath of life to him was givenB
The angels fell into a strife in heavenB
-
-
At length one furious demon grasped the sunB
And sped away as fast as he could runB
And with a ringing laugh of fiendish mirthC
He leaped the battlements and fell to earthC
-
-
Dark was it then in heaven but light belowD
For there the demon wandered to and froD
Tilting aloft upon a slender poleE
The orb of day the pilfering old soulE
-
-
The angels wept and wailed but through the darkF
The Great Creator's voice cried sternly sternly 'HarkF
Who will restore to me the orb of LightG
Him will I honor in all heaven's sight '-
-
-
Then over the battlements there dropped anotherH
A shrewder angel well there could not beI
Quoth he 'Behold my love for thee my brotherH
For I have left all heaven to stay with theeI
-
-
'Thy loneliness and wanderings I will shareJ
Thy heavy burden I will help thee bear '-
'Well said ' the demon answered 'and well doneB
But I'll not tax you with this heavy sunB
-
-
'Your company will cheer me it is trueK
And I could never think of burdening you '-
Idly they wandered onward side by sideL
Till by and by they neared a silvery tideL
-
-
'Let's bathe ' the angel suddenly suggestedM
'Agreed ' the demon answered 'I'll go lastN
Because I needs must leave quite unmolestedO
This tiresome sun which I will now make fast '-
-
-
He set the pole well in the sandy turfP
And called a jackdaw near to watch the placeQ
Meanwhile the angel paddled in the surfP
And playfully dared his brother to a raceQ
-
-
They swam around together for awhileR
The demon always keeping near his prizeS
Till presently the angel with a smileR
Proposed a healthful diving exerciseS
-
-
The demon hesitated 'But ' thought heI
'The jackdaw will inform me with a cryT
If this good brother tries deceiving meI
I will not be outdone by him not I '-
-
-
Down down they went The angel in a triceU
Rose up again and swift to shore he spedV
The jackdaw shrieked but lo a mile of iceU
The demon found had frozen o'er his headV
-
-
He swore an oath and gathered all his forceW
And broke the ice to see the sun of courseW
Held firmly in the radiant angel's handX
Who sailed away toward the heavenly landX
-
-
He gave pursuit Wrath lent speed to his chaseQ
All heaven leaned down to watch the exciting raceQ
On on they came and still the Evil OneB
Gained on the angel burdened with the sunB
-
-
With bated breath and faces white as ghostsY
Over the walls leaned heaven's affrighted hostsY
Up up still up the angel almost spentZ
Threw one foot forward o'er the battlementA2
-
-
The demon seized the other with a shoutB2
So fierce his clutch he pulled the bottom outB2
As the good angel fainting laid the sunB
Down by the throne of God who cried 'Well doneB
Thy great misfortune shall be made divineC2
Man will I create with a foot like thine '-
