We two were lovers the Sea and IA
We plighted our troth neath a summer skyA
-
And all through the riotous ardent weatherB
We dreamed and loved and rejoiced togetherB
-
At times my lover would rage and stormC
I said No matter his heart is warmC
-
Whatever his humour I loved his waysD
And so we lived though the golden daysD
-
I know not the manner it came aboutE
But in the autumn we two fell outE
-
Yet this I know twas the fault of the SeaF
And was not my fault that he changed to meF
-
I lingered as long as a woman mayG
To find what her lover will do or sayG
-
But he met my smiles with a sullen frownH
And so I turned to the wooing TownH
-
Oh bold was this suitor and blithe as boldI
His look was as bright as the Sea s was coldI
-
As the Sea was sullen the Town was gayG
He made me forget for a winter dayG
-
For a winter day and a winter nightJ
He laughed my sorrow away from sightJ
-
And yet in spite of his mirth and cheerK
I knew full well he was insincereK
-
And when the young buds burst on the treeF
The old love woke in my heart for the SeaF
-
Pride was forgotten I knew I knewL
That the soul of the Sea like my own was trueL
-
I heard him calling and lo I cameM
To find him waiting for ever the sameM
-
And when he saw me with murmurs sweetN
He ran to meet me and fell at my feetN
-
And so again neath the summer skyA
We have plighted our troth the Sea and IA
