A Grey Mood Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEFE GHIHJKLK MHNHOPQP RHSHTEAE| As we hurry away to the end my friend | A |
| Of this sad little farce called existence | B |
| We are sure that the future will bring one thing | C |
| And that is the grave in the distance | B |
| And so when our lives run along all wrong | D |
| And nothing seems real or certain | E |
| We can comfort ourselves with the thought or not | F |
| Of that spectre behind the curtain | E |
| - | |
| But we haven t much time to repine or whine | G |
| Or to wound or jostle each other | H |
| And the hour for us each is to day I say | I |
| If we mean to assist a brother | H |
| And there is no pleasure that earth gives birth | J |
| But the worry it brings is double | K |
| And all that repays for the strife of life | L |
| Is helping some soul in trouble | K |
| - | |
| I tell you if I could go back the track | M |
| To my life s morning hour | H |
| I would not set forth seeking name or fame | N |
| Or that poor bauble called power | H |
| I would be like the sunlight and live to give | O |
| I would lend but I would not borrow | P |
| Nor would I be blind and complain of pain | Q |
| Forgetting the meaning of sorrow | P |
| - | |
| This world is a vaporous jest at best | R |
| Tossed off by the gods in laughter | H |
| And a cruel attempt at wit were it | S |
| If nothing better came after | H |
| It is reeking with hearts that ache and break | T |
| Which we ought to comfort and strengthen | E |
| As we hurry away to the end my friend | A |
| And the shadows behind us lengthen | E |
