A Ballade Of The Unborn Dead Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCC DEDEFF GHGHAA IJIJKK LMLMN OPO QA LRLSTT

They walked the valley of the deadA
Lit by a weird half lightB
No sound they made no word they saidA
And they were pale with frightB
Then suddenly from unseen places cameC
Loud laughter that was like a whip of flameC
-
They looked and saw beyond aboveD
A land where wronged souls waitE
Those spirits called to earth by loveD
And driven back by hateE
And each one stood in anguish dumb and wildF
As she beheld the phantom of her childF
-
Yea saw the soul her wish had hurledG
Out into night and deathH
Before it reached the Mother worldG
Or drew its natal breathH
And terrified each hid her face and fledA
Beyond the presence of her unborn deadA
-
And God's Great Angel who providesI
Souls for our mortal landJ
Laughed with the laughter that deridesI
At that fast fleeing bandJ
Of self made barren women of the earthK
Hell has no curse that withers like such mirthK
-
'O Angel tell us who were theyL
That down below us faredM
Those shapes with faces strained and greyL
And eyes that stared and staredM
Something there was about them gave us fearN
Yet are we lonely now they are not here '-
-
Thus spake the spectral children thusO
The Angel made replyP
'They have no part or share with usO
They were but passers by '-
'But may we pray for them ' the phantoms pleadQ
'Yea for they need your prayers ' the Angel saidA
-
They went upon their lonely wayL
Far far from ParadiseR
Their path was lit with one wan rayL
From ghostly children's eyesS
The little children who were never bornT
And as they passed the Angel laughed in scornT
