The Imaginary Iceberg Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBADEFGHH IJJKJLJMJJJ NOJJJPJKQBB

We'd rather have the iceberg than the shipA
although it meant the end of travelB
Although it stood stock still like cloudy rockC
and all the sea were moving marbleB
We'd rather have the iceberg than the shipA
we'd rather own this breathing plain of snowD
though the ship's sails were laid upon the seaE
as the snow lies undissolved upon the waterF
O solemn floating fieldG
are you aware an iceberg takes reposeH
with you and when it wakes may pasture on your snowsH
-
This is a scene a sailor'd give his eyes forI
The ship's ignored The iceberg risesJ
and sinks again its glassy pinnaclesJ
correct elliptics in the skyK
This is a scene where he who treads the boardsJ
is artlessly rhetorical The curtainL
is light enough to rise on finest ropesJ
that airy twists of snow provideM
The wits of these white peaksJ
spar with the sun Its weight the iceberg daresJ
upon a shifting stage and stands and staresJ
-
The iceberg cuts its facets from withinN
Like jewelry from a graveO
it saves itself perpetually and adornsJ
only itself perhaps the snowsJ
which so surprise us lying on the seaJ
Good bye we say good bye the ship steers offP
where waves give in to one another's wavesJ
and clouds run in a warmer skyK
Icebergs behoove the soulQ
both being self made from elements least visibleB
to see them so fleshed fair erected indivisibleB
