i For Robert Lowell iA
-
This is the time of yearB
when almost every nightC
the frail illegal fire balloons appearB
Climbing the mountain heightC
-
rising toward a saintD
still honored in these partsE
the paper chambers flush and fill with lightC
that comes and goes like heartsE
-
Once up against the sky it's hardF
to tell them from the starsG
planets that is the tinted onesH
Venus going down or MarsG
-
or the pale green one With a windI
they flare and falter wobble and tossJ
but if it's still they steer betweenK
the kite sticks of the Southern CrossJ
-
receding dwindling solemnlyL
and steadily forsaking usM
or in the downdraft from a peakN
suddenly turning dangerousM
-
Last night another big one fellO
It splattered like an egg of fireP
against the cliff behind the houseQ
The flame ran down We saw the pairR
-
of owls who nest there flying upS
and up their whirling black and whiteC
stained bright pink underneath untilT
they shrieked up out of sightC
-
The ancient owls' nest must have burnedU
Hastily all aloneV
a glistening armadillo left the sceneK
rose flecked head down tail downW
-
and then a baby rabbit jumped outX
short eared to our surpriseY
So soft a handful of intangible ashZ
with fixed ignited eyesY
-
i Too pretty dreamlike mimicry O falling fire and piercing cry and panicA2
and a weak mailed fist clenched ignorant against the sky iA
