A Prodigal Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABACDBCEDFEGGH IJKLMJMLNMMNOP

The brown enormous odor he lived byA
was too close with its breathing and thick hairB
for him to judge The floor was rotten the styA
was plastered halfway up with glass smooth dungC
Light lashed self righteous above moving snoutsD
the pigs' eyes followed him a cheerful stareB
even to the sow that always ate her youngC
till sickening he leaned to scratch her headE
But sometimes mornings after drinking boutsD
he hid the pints behind the two by foursF
the sunrise glazed the barnyard mud with redE
the burning puddles seemed to reassureG
And then he thought he almost might endureG
his exile yet another year or moreH
-
But evenings the first star came to warnI
The farmer whom he worked for came at darkJ
to shut the cows and horses in the barnK
beneath their overhanging clouds of hayL
with pitchforks faint forked lightnings catching lightM
safe and companionable as in the ArkJ
The pigs stuck out their little feet and snoredM
The lantern like the sun going awayL
laid on the mud a pacing aureoleN
Carrying a bucket along a slimy boardM
he felt the bats' uncertain staggering flightM
his shuddering insights beyond his controlN
touching him But it took him a long timeO
finally to make up his mind to go homeP
