Winter The Season For The Exercise Of Charity Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCC DDEE FFGH IIJK LLMM NNOO PPQR SSTU

We know 'tis good that old Winter should comeA
Roving awhile from his Lapland homeB
'Tis fitting that we should hear the soundC
Of his reindeer sledge on the slippery groundC
-
For his wide and glittering cloak of snowD
Protects the seeds of life belowD
Beneath his mantle are nurtured and bornE
The roots of the flowers the germs of the cornE
-
The whistling tone of his pure strong breathF
Rides purging the vapours of pestilent deathF
I love him I say and avow it againG
For God's wisdom and might shew well in his trainH
-
But the naked the poor I know they quailI
With crouching limbs from the biting galeI
They pine and starve by the fireless hearthJ
And weep as they gaze on the frost bound earthK
-
Stand nobly forth ye rich of the landL
With kindly heart and bounteous handL
Remember 'tis now their season of needM
And a prayer for help is a call you must heedM
-
A few of thy blessings a tithe of thy goldN
Will save the young and cherish the oldN
'Tis a glorious task to work such goodO
Do it ye great ones Ye can and ye shouldO
-
He is not worthy to hold from HeavenP
The trust reposed the talents givenP
Who will not add to the portion that's scantQ
In the pinching hours of cold and wantR
-
Oh listen in mercy ye sons of wealthS
Basking in comfort and glowing with healthS
Give whate'er ye can spare and be sureT
He serveth his Maker who aideth the poorU
