The Sea-child Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDD EEFFGGHH IIJJKKLL MMNNOOPP

HE crawls to the cliff and plays on a brinkA
Where every eye but his own would shrinkA
No music he hears but the billow s noiseB
And shells and weeds are his only toysB
No lullaby can the mother findC
To sing him to rest like the moaning windC
And the louder it wails and the fiercer it sweepsD
The deeper he breathes and the sounder he sleepsD
-
And now his wandering feet can reachE
The rugged tracks of the desolate beachE
Creeping about like a Triton impF
To find the haunts of the crab and shrimpF
He clings with none to guide or helpG
To the furthest ridge of slippery kelpG
And his bold heart glows while he stands and mocksH
The seamew s cry on the jutting rocksH
-
Few years have wan d and now he standsI
Bareheaded on the shelving sandsI
A boat is moor d but his young hands copeJ
Right well with the twisted cable ropeJ
He frees the craft she kisses the tideK
The boy has climb d her beaten sideK
She drifts she floats he shouts with gleeL
His soul hath claim d its right on the seaL
-
T is vain to tell him the howling breathM
Rides over the waters with wreck and deathM
He ll say there s more of fear and painN
On the plague ridden earth than the storm lash d mainN
T would be as wise to spend thy powerO
In trying to lure the bee from the flowerO
The lark from the sky or the worm from the graveP
As in weaning the Sea Child from the waveP
