As though it challenged brighter beam | B |
That orb may sparkle flash and roll | C |
Its fire may blaze its shaft may fly | D |
But not for me I prize the soul | C |
That slumbers in a quiet eye | D |

There s something in its placid shade | E |
That tells of calm unworldly thought | F |
Hope may be crown d or joy delay d | G |
No dimness steals no ray is caught | H |
Its pensive language seems to say | I |
I know that I must close and die | D |
And death itself come when it may | I |
Can hardly change the quiet eye | D |

There s meaning in its steady glance | J |
Of gentle blame or praising love | K |
That makes me tremble to advance | J |
A word that meaning might reprove | K |
The haughty threat the fiery look | L |
My spirit proudly can defy | K |
But never yet could meet and brook | L |
The upbraiding of a quiet eye | K |

There s firmness in its even light | M |
That augurs of a breast sincere | N |
And oh take watch how ye excite | M |
That firmness till it yield a tear | O |
Some bosoms give an easy sigh | K |
Some drops of grief will freely start | P |
But that which sears the quiet eye | K |
Hath its deep fountain in the heart | P |
