With the lifting of the curtainA
Distance dim but grimly certainA
Breaks my vision of a city populous and greatB
To my senses sorrow satedC
Senses sad and satiated Faintly comes the thunder peal of treasured wrong and hateB
Broken downD
Beaten downD
By awakened people and the iron arm of FateB
Pallid forms by famine shrunkenA
Helots harlots ribald drunkenA
Wine and blood wet onward thro' the torchlit highways sweepE
Through a city disunitedB
Through a city flame ignitedB
To the sound of song and trumpet and the cannon's deepE
Distant boomF
Through the gloomF
While the fire fiends madly leaps from tower to temple steepE
-
Reinforced from slum and alleyG
By this wild and weird reveilleG
Pours the army of the people where their banners drapeH
In a city barricadedB
In a city fusilladedB
By the deadly rifle and the Gatling and the grapeH
Crashing downD
Smashing downD
Lanes and alleys filthy and the foul abode of rapeH
-
Tyrants flee and cowards falterI
For a lamp post and a halterI
Wait for every tyrant at the corner of the streetB
In the hour of retributionA
In the night of revolutionA
When on common ground the tyrant and the helot meetB
Endless wrongsJ
Countless wrongsJ
Burning in the helot's bosom fanned to fever heatB
-
Let the tyrant beg no pityB
His the palace his the cityB
His the silken raiment and the costly food and wineK
Ours the forms emaciatedB
Of the women violatedB
Ours the endless torture in the workshop and the mineK
Hunted downD
Hounded downD
To the level of the felon and the concubineK
-
By our women fever strickenA
Where the foetid odours thickenA
In the homes of hunger where the children cry for breadB
By your soulless apatheticL
Scorning of our wrongs patheticL
By the seas of blood and tears by generations shedB
Stealing downD
Streaming downD
Now we ask with smoking rifle vengeance on your headB
-
Marching on with footsteps steadyB
Shotted guns and bayonets readyB
Goes the army of the people in the days to beB
Through a city barricadedB
Through a city fusilladedB
Where the discontented masses struggle to be freeB
Breaking downD
Beating downD
Wrongs of ages to the song of Long Live AnarchyB
