Rhyme Scheme: AABBCD EEFFGG HHIIJJ EEKKBB LLMINN OOPQOO RRKMOO KKSSTT KKOOUUThe Mecca of Bohemian men | A |
Was Archibald's untidy den | A |
Firm footed near the portals there | B |
Uprose as now a spacious stair | B |
That carried nearer to the sky | C |
Their inky hopes in days forebye | D |
- | |
This ladder to Parnassus they | E |
Expectant climbed as still one may | E |
Oft times upon its steps appeared | F |
The wiry brush of Daley's beard | F |
Of Henry Lawson's drooped moustache | G |
Would upward glide and downward dash | G |
- | |
Betimes a gem his pocket in | H |
Meandered upward Ronald Quinn | H |
Or Bayldon bore a sonnet new | I |
Or Broomfield occupied the view | I |
Insistent in a manner vain | J |
On making passes with his cane | J |
- | |
These might encounter on the way | E |
The 'Banjo' glum or Hugh McCrae | E |
Or Souter with a leering cat | K |
Or Bedford in a Queensland hat | K |
And other penmen debonair | B |
Familiar with that famous stair | B |
- | |
The Red Tressed Maiden all aglow | L |
And Clancy of the Overflow | L |
And Dad and Dave in company | M |
With Ginger Mick and Jock MacFee | I |
From time to time in singles pairs | N |
By hand or post went up those stairs | N |
- | |
Awaiting by McMahon's door | O |
For silver little less or more | O |
Met jesting genius to abuse | P |
The landlords and the lending Jews | Q |
Anon with cash in hand such drear | O |
Considerations drowned in beer | O |
- | |
Would pass as pass the clouds of morn | R |
And from their ready wits reborn | R |
As from a fount in Arcady | K |
Would flow fair dreams of Days to Be | M |
When in this Southland shore to shore | O |
Art was enthroned for evermore | O |
- | |
That noble vision yet I hold | K |
More precious is than all the gold | K |
That men have dug from southern earth | S |
In loyal hearts it had its birth | S |
In loyal minds it will become | T |
A trumpet note a calling drum | T |
- | |
To lead this nation onward and | K |
To glorify and grace the land | K |
And through that fellowship may ne'er | O |
As then it was re climb the Stair | O |
Its voices echo down the years | U |
The voices of the pioneers | U |
