The Senior Fellow Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD DEDEAFAF GBGBAHAH IJIJAKAK ALALMNON APAPADAD

When the shades of eve descendingA
Throw o'er cloistered courts their gloomB
Dimly with the twilight blendingA
Memories long forgotten loomB
From the bright fire's falling embersC
Faces smile that smiled of yoreD
Till my heart again remembersC
Hopes and thoughts that live no moreD
-
Then again does manhood's vigourD
Nerve my arm with iron strengthE
As of old when trained with rigourD
We beat Oxford by a lengthE
Once again the willow wieldingA
Do I urge the flying ballF
Till lost ball the men who're fieldingA
Hot and weary faintly callF
-
Then I think of hours of studyG
Study silent as the tombB
Till the rays of morning ruddyG
Shone within my lonely roomB
Once again my heart is burningA
With ambition's restless glowH
And long hidden founts of learningA
O'er my thirsty spirit flowH
-
Soon fresh scenes my fancy peopleI
For I see a wooded hillJ
See above the well known steepleI
Hear below the well known rillJ
Joyous sounds each gale is bringingA
Wafted on its fragrant breathK
Hark I hear young voices singingA
Voices silent now in deathK
-
Brothers sisters loved and lovingA
Hold me in their fond embraceL
Half forgiving half reprovingA
I can see my Mother's faceL
Mid a night of raven tressesM
Through the gloom two sad eyes shineN
And my hand a soft hand pressesO
And a heart beats close to mineN
-
In mine ears a voice is ringingA
Sweeter far than earthly strainP
Heavenly consolation bringingA
From the land that knows no painP
And when slowly from me stealingA
Fades that vision into airD
Every pulse beats with the feelingA
That a Spirit loved was thereD
