NOTE The following imitation of Cowper's Boadicea was written in most of its predictions have since been fulfilledA
-
When the Cambridge flower show endedB
And the flowers and guests were goneC
And the evening shades descendedB
Roamed a man forlorn aloneD
-
Sage beside the River slowE
Sat the Don renowned for loreF
And in accents soft and lowE
To the elms his love did pourF
-
Julia if my learned eyesG
Gaze upon thy matchless faceH
'Tis because I feel there liesG
Magic in thy lovely graceH
-
I will marry write that threatI
In the ink I daily wasteJ
Marry pay each College debtI
College Ale no more will tasteJ
-
Granta far and wide renownedK
Frowns upon the married stateL
Soon her pride shall kiss the groundK
Hark Reform is at the gateL
-
Other Fellows shall ariseG
Proud to own a husband's nameM
Proud to own their infants' criesG
Harmony the path to fameM
-
Then the progeny that springsN
From our ancient College wallsO
Armed with trumpets noisy thingsN
Shall astound us by their squallsO
-
Sounds no wrangler yet has heardP
Our posterity shall frightQ
E'en 'the Eagle ' valiant birdP
Shall betake itself to flightQ
-
Such the thoughts that through him whirl'dR
Pensively reclining thereS
Smiling as his fingers curledR
His divinely glowing hairS
-
He with all a lover's prideT
Felt his manly bosom glowE
Sought the Bull besought the BrideT
All she said was No Sir NoE
-
Julia pitiless as coldU
Lo the vengeance due from HeavenV
College Living he doth holdU
Single bliss to thee is givenV
-
The Eagle is the well known Magazine of St John's College CambridgeW
