In Memoriam G. A. P Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GDGD HIHI JKJK LELE MDMDHe has gone to his grave in the strength of youth | A |
While life shone bright before him | B |
And we who remember his worth and truth | A |
Stand vainly grieving o'er him | B |
- | |
He has gone to his grave that manly heart | C |
No more with life is glowing | D |
And the tears to our eyes unbidden start | C |
Our sad hearts' overflowing | D |
- | |
I gaze on his rooms as beneath I pace | E |
And the past again comes o'er me | F |
For I feel his grasp and I see his face | E |
And his voice has a welcome for me | F |
- | |
I gaze on the river and see once more | G |
His form in the race competing | D |
And I hear the time of his well known oar | G |
And the shouts his triumph greeting | D |
- | |
Flow on cold river Our bitter grief | H |
No tears from thy waves can waken | I |
Thy whisp'ring reed and thy willow leaf | H |
By no sad sighs are shaken | I |
- | |
Thy banks are thronged by the young and gay | J |
Who dream not of the morrow | K |
No ear hast thou for a mournful lay | J |
No sympathy with sorrow | K |
- | |
Flow on dull river Thy heedless wave | L |
As it echoes shouts of gladness | E |
Bears forms as stalwart and hearts as brave | L |
As his whom we mourn in sadness | E |
- | |
But an arm more strong and a heart more bold | M |
And with purer feelings glowing | D |
Thy flowing waters shall ne'er behold | M |
Till time has ceased from flowing | D |
