In Memoriam G. A. P Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GDGD HIHI JKJK LELE MDMD

He has gone to his grave in the strength of youthA
While life shone bright before himB
And we who remember his worth and truthA
Stand vainly grieving o'er himB
-
He has gone to his grave that manly heartC
No more with life is glowingD
And the tears to our eyes unbidden startC
Our sad hearts' overflowingD
-
I gaze on his rooms as beneath I paceE
And the past again comes o'er meF
For I feel his grasp and I see his faceE
And his voice has a welcome for meF
-
I gaze on the river and see once moreG
His form in the race competingD
And I hear the time of his well known oarG
And the shouts his triumph greetingD
-
Flow on cold river Our bitter griefH
No tears from thy waves can wakenI
Thy whisp'ring reed and thy willow leafH
By no sad sighs are shakenI
-
Thy banks are thronged by the young and gayJ
Who dream not of the morrowK
No ear hast thou for a mournful layJ
No sympathy with sorrowK
-
Flow on dull river Thy heedless waveL
As it echoes shouts of gladnessE
Bears forms as stalwart and hearts as braveL
As his whom we mourn in sadnessE
-
But an arm more strong and a heart more boldM
And with purer feelings glowingD
Thy flowing waters shall ne'er beholdM
Till time has ceased from flowingD
-
