She wore a sweet pink bonnetA
The sweetest ever knownB
And as I gazed upon itC
My heart was not my ownB
For I know not why or whereforeD
A pink bonnet put on wellE
Tho' few other things I care forD
Acts upon me like a spellE
-
'Twas at the May Term RacesF
That first I met her eyeG
Amid a thousand GracesH
No form with her's could vieG
On Grassy's sward enamelledC
She reigned fair Beauty's QueenI
And every heart entrammell'dC
With the charms of sweet eighteenI
-
Once more I saw that BonnetC
'Twas on the King's ParadeC
Once more I gazed upon itC
And silent homage paidC
She knew not I was gazingJ
She passed unheeding byG
While I in trance amazingJ
Stood staring at the skyG
-
The May Term now is overD
That Bonnet has 'gone down'I
And I'm myself a roverD
Far from my Cap and GownI
But I dread the Long VacationI
And its work by night and dayC
After all the dissipationI
Energetic of the MayC
-
For x and y will vanishK
When that Bonnet I recallL
And a vision fair will banishK
Newton Euclid and SnowballL
And a gleam of tresses goldenI
And of eyes divinely blueM
Will interfere with HoldenI
And my Verse and Prose imbueM
-
-
-
These sweet girl graduate beautiesN
With their bonnets and their rosesH
Will mar ere long the dutiesN
Which Granta wise imposesF
Who when such eyes are shiningJ
Can quell his heart's sensationsO
Or turn without repiningJ
To Square Root and EquationsO
-
And when conspicuous my nameP
By absence shall appearD
When I have lost all hopes of fameP
Which once I held so dearD
When 'plucked' I seek a vain reliefQ
In plaintive dirge or sonnetC
Thou wilt have caused that bitter griefQ
Thou beautiful Pink BonnetC
