That first I met her eye | G |
Amid a thousand Graces | H |

She reigned fair Beauty's Queen | I |
And every heart entrammell'd | C |
With the charms of sweet eighteen | I |

Once more I saw that Bonnet | C |
'Twas on the King's Parade | C |
Once more I gazed upon it | C |
And silent homage paid | C |
She knew not I was gazing | J |
She passed unheeding by | G |
While I in trance amazing | J |
Stood staring at the sky | G |

The May Term now is over | D |
That Bonnet has 'gone down' | I |
And I'm myself a rover | D |
Far from my Cap and Gown | I |
But I dread the Long Vacation | I |
And its work by night and day | C |
After all the dissipation | I |
Energetic of the May | C |

For x and y will vanish | K |
When that Bonnet I recall | L |
And a vision fair will banish | K |
Newton Euclid and Snowball | L |
And a gleam of tresses golden | I |
And of eyes divinely blue | M |
Will interfere with Holden | I |
And my Verse and Prose imbue | M |

These sweet girl graduate beauties | N |
With their bonnets and their roses | H |
Will mar ere long the duties | N |
Which Granta wise imposes | F |
Who when such eyes are shining | J |
Can quell his heart's sensations | O |
Or turn without repining | J |
To Square Root and Equations | O |

And when conspicuous my name | P |
By absence shall appear | D |
When I have lost all hopes of fame | P |
Which once I held so dear | D |
When 'plucked' I seek a vain relief | Q |
In plaintive dirge or sonnet | C |
Thou wilt have caused that bitter grief | Q |
