Rhyme Scheme: A BCBDBABA A BEBEFGFH A BDBIJAJA

IA
-
I cannot rest o' the night MotherB
For my heart is cold and wanC
I fear the return o' light MotherB
Since my own true love is goneD
O winsome aye was his face MotherB
And tender his bright blue eyeA
But his beauty and manly grace MotherB
Beneath the dark earth do lieA

-
They tell me that I am young MotherB
That joy will return once moreE
But sorrow my heart has wrung MotherB
And I feel the wound full soreE
The tree at the root frost bittenF
Will flourish never againG
And the woe that my life hath smittenF
Hath frozen each inmost veinH
-
-
IIIA
-
Whene'er the moon's shining clear MotherB
I think o' my lover that's goneD
Heaven seem'd to draw very near MotherB
As above us in glory it shoneI
Ah whither hath fled all my gladnessJ
Ah would from life I could flyA
That laying me down in my sadnessJ
I might kiss thee my Mother and dieA
