The Glow-worm Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBA CDCD EFFE GHGH

The pale road winds faintly upward into the dark skiesA
And beside it on the rough grass that the wind invisibly stirsB
Sheltered by sharp speared gorse and the berried junipersB
Shining steadily with a green light the glow worm liesA
-
We regard it and this hill and all the other hillsC
That fall in folds to the river very smooth and steepD
And the hangers and brakes that the darkness thickly fillsC
Fade like phantoms round the light and night is deep so deepD
-
That all the world is emptiness about the still flameE
And we are small shadows standing lost in the huge nightF
We gather up the glow worm stooping with dazzled sightF
And carry it to the little enclosed garden whence we cameE
-
And place it on the short grass Then the shadowy flowers fadeG
The walls waver and melt and the houses disappearH
And the solid town trembles into insubstantial shadeG
Round the light of the burning glow worm steady and clearH
