This happened many years agoA
Before the bush was clearedB
When every man was six foot highC
And wore a flowing beardB
-
One very hot and windy dayD
Along the old coach roadE
Towards Joe Murphy s halfway houseF
A bearded bushman strodeE
-
He was a huge and heavy manG
Well over six foot highC
An old slouch hat was on his headH
And murder in his eyeC
-
No billy can was in his handI
No heavy swag he boreJ
But deep and awful were the oathsK
That swagless swaggie sworeJ
-
At last he reached the shanty doorJ
Into the bar he burstL
He dumped his hat upon the floorJ
And cursed and cursed and cursedL
-
A neighboring shed had just cut outM
The bar was nearly fullN
Of shearers and of bullockiesK
Who d come to cart the woolN
-
They were a rough and ready lotO
The bushmen gathered thereP
But every man was stricken dumbQ
To hear the stranger swearP
-
He cursed the bush he cursed mankindR
The whole wide universeK
It froze their very blood to hearS
That swagless swaggie curseK
-
Joe Murphy seized an empty potO
And filled it brimming fullN
The stranger raised it to his lipsK
And took a mighty pullN
-
This seemed to cool him down a bitT
He finished off the aleU
And to the crowd around the barV
He told his awful taleU
-
I met the Ben Hall gang he saidH
The blankards stuck me upW
They pinched me billy pinched me swagA
And pinched me flamin pupW
-
They turned me pockets inside outM
And took me only quidX
I never thought they d pinch me pipeY
But swelp me gawd they didX
-
I spoke to em as man to manG
I said I d fight em allZ
I would have broke O Mealleys neckA
And tanned the hide of HallZ
-
They only laughed and said good byeC
And rode away to bragA
Of how they stuck a swaggie upW
And robbed him of his swagA
-
I never done em any harmA2
I thought em decent chapsK
But now I wouldn t raise a handI
To save em from the trapsK
-
I m finished with the bush for goodB2
I m off to Wagga townC2
Where they won t stick a swaggie upW
Or take a swaggie downC2
-
The bushmen were a decent lotO
As bushmen mostly areV
They filled the stranger up with beerD2
The hat went round the barV
-
The shearers threw some blankets inE2
To make another swagA
The rousers gave a billy canG
And brand new tucker bagA
-
Joe Murphy gave a meerschaum pipeY
He hadn t smoked for yearsK
The stranger was too full of wordsK
His eyes were dim with tearsK
-
The ringer shouted drinks all roundF2
And then to top it upW
The babbling brook the shearers cookA
Gave him a kelpie pupW
-
Next day an hour before the dawnG2
The stranger took the trackA
Complete with pup and billy canG
His swag upon his backA
-
Along the most forsaken roadsK
Intent on dodging graftH2
He headed for the Great North WestI2
And laughed and laughed and laughedH2
