Devine came back the other dayA
We'd planned a great home comin'B
No long trombone we had to playA
No fine heroic drummin'B
With two sticks and a milk can BorneB
Put up a martial clatterC
While Carter blew a bullock hornB
Says Tom Devine with healthy scornB
Gorstruth what is the matterC
-
We set three colored petticoatsD
From Baker's chimneys blowin'B
'Tis not the bravest flag that floatsD
Yet 'twas the finest goin'B
We cheered our hero all we knewB
No song of praise neglectin'B
To show our pride as he limped throughB
He merely spat and snorted WhoB
The deuce are yous expectin'B
-
They lured him to my shop somehowE
And sued for news of battleF
Says Tom Who rides the mail track nowE
Who herdin' Stringer's cattleF
A dint the Turk put in his headG
He covers with a ringletG
He'd won a medal so we readG
I might 'ave 'ad it pinched he saidG
I've sewn it in my singletG
-
Says Cole But 'struth you must 'ave seenB
A fearful swag of scrappin'B
And Tom agrees Where men are keenB
That's pretty sure to 'appenB
One night a little bloke from HayA
Who plugged a Pentridge warderC
Got such a doin' that at dayA
Amazed they ticked him for a strayA
Distinguished Service OrderC
-
Then Sydney Bob was rather vexedG
With Green who'd pinched his bracesH
That was 'continued in our next'G
In half a score of placesH
McCubbin threw his grub at LeaI
You know how sticky stew isJ
They fought till neither man could seeI
You talk of fight Gorstrike me weI
Saw stacks of it at SuezK
