To The King On His Navy Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEFGHIIJJKKLM NNOOPP QQRSII

Where'er thy navy spreads her canvas wingsA
Homage to thee and peace to all she bringsA
The French and Spaniard when thy flags appearB
Forget their hatred and consent to fearB
So Jove from Ida did both hosts surveyC
And when he pleas'd to thunder part the frayC
Ships heretofore in seas like fishes spedD
The mightiest still upon the smallest fedD
Thou on the deep imposest nobler lawsE
And by that justice hast remov'd the causeF
Of those rude tempests which for rapine sentG
Too oft alas involv'd the innocentH
Now shall the ocean as thy Thames be freeI
From both those fates of storms and piracyI
But we most happy who can fear no forceJ
But winged troops or Pegasean horseJ
'Tis not so hard for greedy foes to spoilK
Another nation as to touch our soilK
Should Nature's self invade the world againL
And o'er the centre spread the liquid mainM
Thy power were safe and her destructive handN
Would but enlarge the bounds of thy commandN
Thy dreadful fleet would style thee lord of allO
And ride in triumph o'er the drowned ballO
Those towers of oak o'er fertile plains might goP
And visit mountains where they once did growP
-
The world's restorer once could not endureQ
That finish'd Babel should those men secureQ
Whose pride design'd that fabric to have stoodR
Above the reach of any second floodS
To thee His chosen more indulgent HeI
Dares trust such power with so much pietyI
