In these rapid restless shadowsA
Once I walked at eventideB
When a gentle silent maidenC
Walked in beauty at my sideB
She alone there walked beside meD
All in beauty like a brideB
-
Pallidly the moon was shiningE
On the dewy meadows nighF
On the silvery silent riversG
On the mountains far and highF
On the ocean's star lit watersG
Where the winds a weary dieF
-
Slowly silently we wanderedB
From the open cottage doorH
Underneath the elm's long branchesI
To the pavement bending o'erJ
Underneath the mossy willowK
And the dying sycamoreH
-
With the myriad stars in beautyD
All bedight the heavens were seenL
Radiant hopes were bright around meD
Like the light of stars sereneL
Like the mellow midnight splendorJ
Of the Night's irradiate queenL
-
Audibly the elm leaves whisperedB
Peaceful pleasant melodiesM
Like the distant murmured musicN
Of unquiet lovely seasM
While the winds were hushed in slumberJ
In the fragrant flowers and treesM
-
Wondrous and unwonted beautyD
Still adorning all did seemO
While I told my love in fablesP
'Neath the willows by the streamO
Would the heart have kept unspokenC
Love that was its rarest dreamO
-
Instantly away we wanderedB
In the shadowy twilight tideB
She the silent scornful maidenC
Walking calmly at my sideB
With a step serene and statelyD
All in beauty all in prideB
-
Vacantly I walked beside herJ
On the earth mine eyes were castB
Swift and keen there came unto meD
Bitter memories of the pastB
On me like the rain in AutumnQ
On the dead leaves cold and fastB
-
Underneath the elms we partedB
By the lowly cottage doorH
One brief word alone was utteredB
Never on our lips beforeH
And away I walked forlornlyD
Broken hearted evermoreH
-
Slowly silently I loiteredB
Homeward in the night aloneR
Sudden anguish bound my spiritB
That my youth had never knownR
Wild unrest like that which comethS
When the Night's first dream hath flownR
-
Now to me the elm leaves whisperJ
Mad discordant melodiesM
And keen melodies like shadowsA
Haunt the moaning willow treesM
And the sycamores with laughterJ
Mock me in the nightly breezeM
-
Sad and pale the Autumn moonlightB
Through the sighing foliage streamsT
And each morning midnight shadowB
Shadow of my sorrow seemsT
Strive O heart forget thine idolD
And O soul forget thy dreamsT
