How shall the burial rite be readA
The solemn song be sungB
The requiem for the loveliest deadA
That ever died so youngB
-
IIC
-
Her friends are gazing on herD
And on her gaudy bierE
And weep oh to dishonorD
Dead beauty with a tearF
-
IIIC
-
They loved her for her wealthG
And they hated her for her prideH
But she grew in feeble healthG
And they love her that she diedH
-
IVI
-
They tell me while they speakJ
Of her 'costly broider'd pall'K
That my voice is growing weakJ
That I should not sing at allK
-
VI
-
Or that my tone should beI
Tun'd to such solemn songL
So mournfully so mournfullyK
That the dead may feel no wrongL
-
VII
-
But she is gone aboveI
With young Hope at her sideH
And I am drunk with loveI
Of the dead who is my brideH
-
VIII
-
Of the dead dead who liesM
All perfum'd thereF
With the death upon her eyesM
And the life upon her hairF
-
VIIII
-
Thus on the coffin loud and longL
I strike the murmur sentN
Through the grey chambers to my songL
Shall be the accompanimentO
-
IXM
-
Thou died'st in thy life's JuneP
But thou did'st not die too fairF
Thou did'st not die too soonP
Nor with too calm an airF
-
XM
-
From more than fiends on earthQ
Thy life and love are rivenR
To join the untainted mirthQ
Of more than thrones in heavenR
-
XIIM
-
Therefore to thee this nightS
I will no requiem raiseM
But waft thee on thy flightS
With a P an of old daysM
