Vacation Time Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEEFFGGCCHHII JKLLMMNN GGOOPPGGQQGGFFVacation time How glad it seemed | A |
When as a boy I sat and dreamed | A |
Above my school books of the fun | B |
That I should claim when toil was done | B |
And Oh how oft my youthful eye | C |
Went wandering with the patch of sky | C |
That drifted by the window panes | D |
O'er pleasant fields and dusty lanes | D |
Where I would race and romp and shout | E |
The very moment school was out | E |
My artful little fingers then | F |
Feigned labor with the ink and pen | F |
But heart and mind were far away | G |
Engaged in some glad bit of play | G |
The last two weeks dragged slowly by | C |
Time hadn't then learned how to fly | C |
It seemed the clock upon the wall | H |
From hour to hour could only crawl | H |
And when the teacher called my name | I |
Unto my cheeks the crimson came | I |
For I could give no answer clear | J |
To questions that I didn't hear | K |
'Wool gathering were you ' oft she said | L |
And smiled to see me blushing red | L |
Her voice had roused me from a dream | M |
Where I was fishing in a stream | M |
And if I now recall it right | N |
Just at the time I had a bite | N |
- | |
And now my youngsters dream of play | G |
In just the very selfsame way | G |
And they complain that time is slow | O |
And that the term will never go | O |
Their little minds with plans are filled | P |
For joyous hours they soon will build | P |
And it is vain for me to say | G |
That have grown old and wise and gray | G |
That time is swift and joy is brief | Q |
They'll put no faith in such belief | Q |
To youthful hearts that long for play | G |
Time is a laggard on the way | G |
'Twas Oh so slow to me back then | F |
Ere I had learned the ways of men | F |
