Vacation time How glad it seemedA
When as a boy I sat and dreamedA
Above my school books of the funB
That I should claim when toil was doneB
And Oh how oft my youthful eyeC
Went wandering with the patch of skyC
That drifted by the window panesD
O'er pleasant fields and dusty lanesD
Where I would race and romp and shoutE
The very moment school was outE
My artful little fingers thenF
Feigned labor with the ink and penF
But heart and mind were far awayG
Engaged in some glad bit of playG
The last two weeks dragged slowly byC
Time hadn't then learned how to flyC
It seemed the clock upon the wallH
From hour to hour could only crawlH
And when the teacher called my nameI
Unto my cheeks the crimson cameI
For I could give no answer clearJ
To questions that I didn't hearK
'Wool gathering were you ' oft she saidL
And smiled to see me blushing redL
Her voice had roused me from a dreamM
Where I was fishing in a streamM
And if I now recall it rightN
Just at the time I had a biteN
-
And now my youngsters dream of playG
In just the very selfsame wayG
And they complain that time is slowO
And that the term will never goO
Their little minds with plans are filledP
For joyous hours they soon will buildP
And it is vain for me to sayG
That have grown old and wise and grayG
That time is swift and joy is briefQ
They'll put no faith in such beliefQ
To youthful hearts that long for playG
Time is a laggard on the wayG
'Twas Oh so slow to me back thenF
Ere I had learned the ways of menF
