Too Big A Price Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EFEFGHGH IJIJKLKL MAM NON

'They say my boy is bad ' she said to meA
A tired old woman thin and very frailB
'They caught him robbing railroad cars an' heA
Must spend from five to seven years in jailB
His Pa an' I had hoped so much for himC
He was so pretty as a little boy 'D
Her eyes with tears grew very wet an' dimC
'Now nothing that we've got can give us joy 'D
-
'What is it that you own ' I questioned thenE
'The house we live in ' slowly she repliedF
'Two other houses worked an' slaved for whenE
The boy was but a youngster at my sideF
Some bonds we took the time he went to warG
I've spent my strength against the want of ageH
We've always had some end to struggle forG
Now shame an' ruin smear the final pageH
-
'His Pa has been a steady goin' manI
Worked day an' night an' overtime as wellJ
He's lived an' dreamed an' sweated to his planI
To own the house an' profit should we sellJ
He never drank nor played much cards at nightK
He's been a worker since our wedding dayL
He's lived his life to what he knows is rightK
An' why should son of his now go astrayL
-
'I've rubbed my years away on scrubbing boardsM
Washed floors for women that owned less than weA
An' while they played the ladies an' the lordsM
We smiled an' dreamed of happiness to be '-
'And all this time where was the boy ' said IN
'Out somewhere playin' ' Like a rifle shotO
The thought went home 'My God ' she gave a cryN
'We paid too big a price for what we got '-
