I have no wish my little ladB
To climb the towering heights of fameC
I am content to be your dadB
And share with you each pleasant gameC
I am content to hold your handD
And walk along life's path with youE
And talk of things we understandD
The birds and trees and skies of blueE
-
Though some may seek the smiles of kingsF
For me your laughter's joy enoughG
I have no wish to claim the thingsF
Which lure men into pathways roughG
I'm happiest when you and IH
Unmindful of life's bitter caresI
Together watch the clouds drift byH
Or follow boyhood's thoroughfaresI
-
I crave no more of life than thisJ
Continuance of such a trustK
Your smile whate'er the morning isL
Until my clay returns to dustK
If but this comradeship may lastM
Until I end my earthly taskN
Your hand and mine by love held fastM
Fame has no charm for which I'd askN
-
I would not trade one day with youE
To wear the purple robes of powerO
Nor drop your hand from mine to doE
Some great deed in a selfish hourO
For you have brought me joy sereneP
And made my soul supremely gladB
In life rewarded I have beenQ
'Twas all worth while to be your dadB
