The Workman's Dream Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCDEFEFGHIHJKJK LMLMANANOGOGTo day it's dirt and dust and steam | A |
To morrow it will be the same | B |
And through it all the soul must dream | A |
And try to play a manly game | B |
Dirt dust and steam and harsh commands | C |
Yet many a soft hand passes by | D |
And only thinks he understands | C |
The purpose of my task and why | D |
I've seen men shudder just to see | E |
Me standing at this lathe of mine | F |
And knew somehow they pitied me | E |
But I have never made a whine | F |
For out of all this dirt and dust | G |
And clang and clamor day by day | H |
Beyond toil's everlasting 'must ' | I |
I see my little ones at play | H |
The hissing steam would drive me mad | J |
If hissing steam was all I heard | K |
But there's a boy who calls me dad | J |
Who daily keeps my courage spurred | K |
And there's a little girl who waits | L |
Each night for all that I may bring | M |
And I'm the guardian of their fates | L |
Which makes this job a wholesome thing | M |
Beyond the dust and dirt and steam | A |
I see a college where he'll go | N |
And when I shall fulfill my dream | A |
More than his father he will know | N |
And she shall be a woman fair | O |
Fit for the world to love and trust | G |
I'll give my land a glorious pair | O |
Out of this place of dirt and dust | G |
