Rhyme Scheme: AABBCC DDEEFF GGHHII AAJJKKThis is the sort of a man was he | A |
True when it hurt him a lot to be | A |
Tight in a corner an' knowin' a lie | B |
Would have helped him out but he wouldn't buy | B |
His freedom there in so cheap a way | C |
He told the truth though he had to pay | C |
- | |
Honest Not in the easy sense | D |
When he needn't worry about expense | D |
We'll all play square when it doesn't count | E |
And the sum at stake's not a large amount | E |
But he was square when the times were bad | F |
An' keepin' his word took all he had | F |
- | |
Honor is something we all profess | G |
But most of us cheat some more some less | G |
An' the real test isn't the way we do | H |
When there isn't a pinch in either shoe | H |
It's whether we're true to our best or not | I |
When the right thing's certain to hurt a lot | I |
- | |
That is the sort of a man was he | A |
Straight when it hurt him a lot to be | A |
Times when a lie would have paid him well | J |
No matter the cost the truth he'd tell | J |
An' he'd rather go down to a drab defeat | K |
Than save himself if he had to cheat | K |
