The True Man Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCC DDEEFF GGHHII AAJJKK

This is the sort of a man was heA
True when it hurt him a lot to beA
Tight in a corner an' knowin' a lieB
Would have helped him out but he wouldn't buyB
His freedom there in so cheap a wayC
He told the truth though he had to payC
-
Honest Not in the easy senseD
When he needn't worry about expenseD
We'll all play square when it doesn't countE
And the sum at stake's not a large amountE
But he was square when the times were badF
An' keepin' his word took all he hadF
-
Honor is something we all professG
But most of us cheat some more some lessG
An' the real test isn't the way we doH
When there isn't a pinch in either shoeH
It's whether we're true to our best or notI
When the right thing's certain to hurt a lotI
-
That is the sort of a man was heA
Straight when it hurt him a lot to beA
Times when a lie would have paid him wellJ
No matter the cost the truth he'd tellJ
An' he'd rather go down to a drab defeatK
Than save himself if he had to cheatK
