Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EFEFGDGD HEIEJDJD KLKLMNMD OPOPQDQD

I DO not care for garments fineA
I do not care for medals brightB
I have no wish to quench with wineA
My thirst when I go home at nightB
I'm satisfied with work to doC
And I'm content to bear my loadD
If only I can carve and hewC
For those I love a better roadD
-
I have no wish for luxuryE
If I must live it all aloneF
Nor do I toil that I may beE
By many strangers better knownF
If I were here to toil for selfG
I'd have a very simple codeD
And I'd need very little pelfG
But I'm the builder of a roadD
-
I'm on this earth to pioneerH
For those who follow after meE
According to my service hereI
Their chance for splendid life will beE
Into the future I must treadJ
Nor whimper at the present goadD
'Tis mine to blaze the path aheadJ
I am the builder of a roadD
-
I dare not shirk what task I findK
I dare not falsely step asideL
Nor leave the tangled brush behindK
My pathway must be clear and wideL
For they will tread the way I goM
They'll come to reap the seed I sowedN
When I am sleeping 'neath the snowM
I am the builder of a roadD
-
It is for them I face the frontO
And strive to keep my pathway straightP
It is for them I bear the bruntO
Of selfishness and bitter hateP
That they may know a smoother wayQ
That they may bear a lighter loadD
I smiling face the heat of dayQ
I am the builder of a roadD
