The Panama Canal Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCE FGFGHDHE IJIJKDKE LMLMNONE PQPQRDRE

ABOVE it flies the flag we loveA
Within it is the blood we gaveB
It stands a part and portion ofA
The courage that once freed the slaveB
The strength that fought for libertyC
Hewed out the rock that barred its wayD
The men who toiled that it might beC
Were children of the U S AE
-
Within its sides there is no stoneF
But what Americans have placedG
Above it other flags have flownF
And seen their labors go to wasteG
To build it other lands have triedH
And have deserted in dismayD
But they who would not be defiedH
Were children of the U S AE
-
Into its massive walls were pouredI
The gold that bore the eagle's stampJ
Within each foot of it is storedI
The grit of Valley Forge's campJ
This wedding of divided seasK
That is a finished fact todayD
Stands out among the victoriesK
That glorify the U S AE
-
No alien land was asked to aidL
No foreign friend was leaned uponM
This by Americans was madeL
While all the world stood looking onM
And molded into every partN
From coast to coast to last for ayeO
There are the blood and flesh and heartN
And genius of the U S AE
-
Beneath Old Glory this was doneP
Beneath Old Glory shall it dwellQ
As long as there are seas'to runP
This nation's splendor shall it tellQ
As long as human hearts shall thrillR
And patriotism men shall swayD
This must remain to speak the skillR
And courage of the U S AE
