We were sittin' thereB
and smokin' of our pipes discussin' thingsC
Like taxes votes for wimminD
an' the totterin' thrones of kingsC
When he ups an' strokes his whiskersE
with his hand an' says to meF
'Changin' laws an' legislatures ain'tG
as fur as I can seeF
Goin' to make this world much betterH
unless somehow we canD
Find a way to make a better an' a finer sort o' manD
-
'The trouble ain't with statutes or with systemsI
not at allJ
It's with humans jus' like we airB
an' their petty ways an' smallJ
We could stop our writin' law booksK
an' our regulatin' rulesL
If a better sort of manhoodM
was the product of our schoolsL
For the things that we air needin'D
isn't writing' from a penD
Or bigger guns to shoot withN
but a bigger type of menD
-
'I reckon all these problemsI
air jest ornery like the weedsO
They grow in soil that oughta nourishP
only decent deedsO
An' they waste our time an' fret us whenD
if we were thinkin' straightQ
An' livin' rightR
they wouldn't be so terrible and greatQ
A good horse needs no snaffleJ
and a good man I opineD
Doesn't need a law to check himS
or to force him into lineD
-
'If we ever start in teachin' to our childrenD
year by yearT
How to live with one anotherH
there'll be less o' trouble hereU
If we'd teach 'em how to neighborH
an' to walk in honor's waysV
We could settle every problemW
which the mind o' man can raiseV
What we're needin' isn't systemsI
or some regulatin' planD
But a bigger an' a finer an' a truer type o' man '-
