Curling smoke from a chimney lowB
And only a few more steps to goB
Faces pressed at a window paneC
Watching for someone to come againD
And I am the someone they wait to seeE
These are the joys life gives to meE
-
What has my neighbor excelling thisF
A good wife's love and a baby's kissF
What if his chimneys tower higherG
Peace is found at our humble fireG
What if his silver and gold are moreH
Rest is ours when the day is o'erG
-
Strive for fortune and slave for fameI
You find that joy always stays the sameI
Rich man and poor man dream and prayJ
For a home where laughter shall ever stayJ
And the wheels go round and men spend their mightK
For the few glad hours they may claim at nightK
-
Home where the kettle shall gaily singL
Is all that matters with serf or kingL
Gold and silver and laurelled fameI
Are only sweet when the hearth's aflameI
With a cheerful fire and the loved ones thereM
Are unafraid of the wolves of careM
-
So let me come home at night to restN
With those who know I have done my bestN
Let the wife rejoice and my children smileO
And I'll know by their love that I am worthwhileO
For this is conquest and world successP
A home where abideth happinessQ
