The Homely Man Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDD AAEFFFGG HHGGIFII AAAAJJDD

Looks as though a cyclone hit himA
Can't buy clothes that seem to fit himA
An' his cheeks are rough like leatherB
Made for standin' any weatherB
Outwards he was fashioned plainlyC
Loose o' joint an' blamed ungainlyC
But I'd give a lot if I'dD
Been built half as fine insideD
-
Best thing I can tell you of himA
Is the way the children love himA
Now an' then I get to thinkin'E
He's much like old Abe LincolnF
Homely like a gargoyle gravenF
Worse'n that when he's unshavenF
But I'd take his ugly phizG
Jes' to have a heart like hisG
-
I ain't over sentimentalH
But old Blake is so blamed gentleH
An' so thoughtfull like of othersG
He reminds us of our mothersG
Rough roads he is always smoothingI
An' his way is Oh so soothin'F
That he takes away the stingI
When your heart is sorrowingI
-
Children gather round about himA
Like they can't get on without himA
An' the old depend upon himA
Pilin' all their burdens on himA
Like as though the thing that grieves 'emJ
Has been lifted when he leaves 'emJ
Homely That can't be deniedD
But he's glorious insideD
