The First Steps Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEFE GHIHJKLK MNONCLKL PQRQSKHKLast night I held my arms to you | A |
And you held yours to mine | B |
And started out to march to me | C |
As any soldier fine | B |
You lifted up your little feet | D |
And laughingly advanced | E |
And I stood there and gazed upon | F |
Your first wee steps entranced | E |
- | |
You gooed and gurgled as you came | G |
Without a sign of fear | H |
As though you knew your journey o'er | I |
I'd greet you with a cheer | H |
And what is more you seemed to know | J |
Although you are so small | K |
That I was there with eager arms | L |
To save you from a fall | K |
- | |
Three tiny steps you took and then | M |
Disaster and dismay | N |
Your over confidence had led | O |
Your little feet astray | N |
You did not see what we could see | C |
Nor fear what us alarms | L |
You stumbled but ere you could fall | K |
I caught you in my arms | L |
- | |
You little tyke in days to come | P |
You'll bravely walk alone | Q |
And you may have to wander paths | R |
Where dangers lurk unknown | Q |
And Oh I pray that then as now | S |
When accidents befall | K |
You'll still remember that I'm near | H |
To save you from a fall | K |
