The First Steps Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEFE GHIHJKLK MNONCLKL PQRQSKHK

Last night I held my arms to youA
And you held yours to mineB
And started out to march to meC
As any soldier fineB
You lifted up your little feetD
And laughingly advancedE
And I stood there and gazed uponF
Your first wee steps entrancedE
-
You gooed and gurgled as you cameG
Without a sign of fearH
As though you knew your journey o'erI
I'd greet you with a cheerH
And what is more you seemed to knowJ
Although you are so smallK
That I was there with eager armsL
To save you from a fallK
-
Three tiny steps you took and thenM
Disaster and dismayN
Your over confidence had ledO
Your little feet astrayN
You did not see what we could seeC
Nor fear what us alarmsL
You stumbled but ere you could fallK
I caught you in my armsL
-
You little tyke in days to comeP
You'll bravely walk aloneQ
And you may have to wander pathsR
Where dangers lurk unknownQ
And Oh I pray that then as nowS
When accidents befallK
You'll still remember that I'm nearH
To save you from a fallK
