The Finer Thought Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCAD EEFFGGH IIAAJKA LLMMAAII HHHHN OO

How fine it is at night to sayA
'I have not wronged a soul to dayA
I have not by a word or deedB
In any breast sowed anger's seedB
Or caused a fellow being painC
Nor is there on my crest a stainC
That shame has left In honor's wayA
With head erect I've lived this day 'D
-
When night slips down and day departsE
And rest returns to weary heartsE
How fine it is to close the bookF
Of records for the day and lookF
Once more along the traveled mileG
And find that all has been worth whileG
To say ' In honor I have toiledH
My plume is spotless and unsoiled '-
-
Yet cold and stern a man may beI
Retaining his integrityI
And he may pass from day to dayA
A spirit dead in living clayA
Observing strictly morals lawsJ
Yet serving but a selfish causeK
So it is not enough to sayA
'I have not stooped to shame to day '-
-
It is a finer nobler thoughtL
When day is done and night has broughtL
The contemplative hours and sweetM
And rest to weary hearts and feetM
If man can stand in truth and sayA
'I have been useful here to dayA
Back there is one I chanced to seeI
With hope newborn because of meI
-
'This day in honor I have toiledH
My shining crest is still unsoiledH
But on the mile I leave behindH
Is one who says that I was kindH
And someone hums a cheerful songN
Because I chanced to come along '-
Sweet rest at night that man shall ownO
Who has not lived his day aloneO
