The Finer Thought Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCAD EEFFGGH IIAAJKA LLMMAAII HHHHN OOHow fine it is at night to say | A |
'I have not wronged a soul to day | A |
I have not by a word or deed | B |
In any breast sowed anger's seed | B |
Or caused a fellow being pain | C |
Nor is there on my crest a stain | C |
That shame has left In honor's way | A |
With head erect I've lived this day ' | D |
- | |
When night slips down and day departs | E |
And rest returns to weary hearts | E |
How fine it is to close the book | F |
Of records for the day and look | F |
Once more along the traveled mile | G |
And find that all has been worth while | G |
To say ' In honor I have toiled | H |
My plume is spotless and unsoiled ' | - |
- | |
Yet cold and stern a man may be | I |
Retaining his integrity | I |
And he may pass from day to day | A |
A spirit dead in living clay | A |
Observing strictly morals laws | J |
Yet serving but a selfish cause | K |
So it is not enough to say | A |
'I have not stooped to shame to day ' | - |
- | |
It is a finer nobler thought | L |
When day is done and night has brought | L |
The contemplative hours and sweet | M |
And rest to weary hearts and feet | M |
If man can stand in truth and say | A |
'I have been useful here to day | A |
Back there is one I chanced to see | I |
With hope newborn because of me | I |
- | |
'This day in honor I have toiled | H |
My shining crest is still unsoiled | H |
But on the mile I leave behind | H |
Is one who says that I was kind | H |
And someone hums a cheerful song | N |
Because I chanced to come along ' | - |
Sweet rest at night that man shall own | O |
Who has not lived his day alone | O |
