HERE 's a letter from John in th' cityA
Ain't heard from him now fer a yearB
Yes his handwritin' s stylish an' prettyA
An' rounded an' wonderf'ly clearB
Says he hopes we are all well an' thrivin'C
Remarks that June's been rather coolD
But I know jes' at what he is drivin'C
When he says that the kids have done schoolD
-
Don't hear much from John through the winterE
Excep' when I go into townC
An' then he don't even begin terE
Warm up or git rid of his frownC
Guess he ain't fond of much entertainin'C
An' mebbe thinks I am a foolD
Yet I know jes' why he's explainin'C
The kids will be soon out of schoolD
-
Poor John ain't got much excep' troubleF
A mortgage or two an' some debtsG
An' I sell a hog fer jes' doubleF
The weekly amount that he getsG
But still John is given ter braggin'C
In the city that's often the ruleD
An' his wife is eternally naggin'C
So the kids will be soon out of schoolD
-
Well I guess that I'll send fer 'em JennyC
Though I ain't got much use fer JohnC
An' I wouldn't favor him anyC
But now that th' summer is onC
Those youngsters need sunshine I 'm thinkin'C
An' air that is fresh an' is coolD
I 'm writin' him darn me I 'm blinkin'C
To send 'em when they 're out of schoolD
