The Dead Return Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEE FFGGHHIIJJ FFKKLLMMNN OOAAPPBBQR

THE dead return I know they doA
The glad smile may have passed from viewA
The ringing voice that cheered us soB
In that remembered long agoB
Be stilled and yet in sweeter waysC
It speaks to us throughout our daysC
The kindly father comes againD
To guide us through the haunts of menD
And always near their sons to greetE
Are lingering the mothers sweetE
-
About us wheresoe'er we treadF
Hover the spirits of our deadF
We cannot see them as we couldG
In bygone days when near they stoodG
And shared the joys and griefs that cameH
But they are with us just the sameH
They see us as we plod alongI
And proudly smile when we are strongI
And sigh and grieve the selfsame wayJ
When thoughtlessly we go astrayJ
-
I sometimes think it hurts the deadF
When into sin and shame we're ledF
And that they feel a thrill divineK
When we've accomplished something fineK
And sometimes thoughts that come at nightL
Seem more like messages that mightL
Have whispered been by one we loveM
Whose spirit has been called aboveM
So wise the counsel it must beN
That all we are the dead can seeN
-
The dead return They come to shareO
Our laughter and our bit of careO
They glory as they used to doA
When we are splendid men and trueA
In all the joy that we have wonP
And they are proud of what we've doneP
They suffer when we suffer woeB
All things about us here they knowB
And though we never see them hereQ
Their spirits hover very nearR
