Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEDEFGFG HIHIJKJKLMLM NONOPBPBQRQRA year is filled with glad events | A |
The best is Christmas day | B |
But every holiday presents | C |
Its special round of play | B |
And looking back on boyhood now | D |
And all the charms it knew | E |
One day above the rest somehow | D |
Seems brightest in review | E |
That day was finest I believe | F |
Though many grown ups scoff | G |
When mother said that we could leave | F |
Our shoes and stockings off | G |
- | |
Through all the pleasant days of spring | H |
We begged to know once more | I |
The joy of barefoot wandering | H |
And quit the shoes we wore | I |
But always mother shook her head | J |
And answered with a smile | K |
It is too soon too soon she said | J |
Wait just a little while | K |
Then came that glorious day at last | L |
When mother let us know | M |
That fear of taking cold was past | L |
And we could barefoot go | M |
- | |
Though Christmas day meant much to me | N |
And eagerly I'd try | O |
The first boy on the street to be | N |
The Fourth day of July | O |
I think the summit of my joy | P |
Was reached that happy day | B |
Each year when as a barefoot boy | P |
I hastened out to play | B |
Could I return to childhood fair | Q |
That day I think I'd choose | R |
When mother said I needn't wear | Q |
My stockings and my shoes | R |
